NJGOP Chairman: Democrats trample US Constitution to appease their political insecurities

.
Trenton, NJ –  Yesterday, the New Jersey Senate voted on legislation that would block President Trump from appearing on the ballot if he did not reveal his tax returns (S119).

.
Democrats in the legislature like Senator Loretta Weinberg justified this legislation by saying “voters deserve to know that every candidate on the ballot is without compromise” and “we have the right to know that no action taken by an administration is motivated by personal financial gain, as opposed to the good of the republic.”

.

However, when Senator Joe Pennacchio presented an amendment to the bill that would hold all political candidates at the state level to the very same standard, his motion was unanimously tabled by Senate Democrats.

.
NJGOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt offered the following statement on yesterday’s events:

.
“Democrat politicians in New Jersey are so desperate to defeat President Trump that they have stooped to using the state legislature as an unconstitutional political weapon to block him from even appearing on the ballot.  The legislature’s own Office of Legislative Affairs rendered the same opinion. In a patently un-Democratic and dictatorial move, the State’s Democrats now seek to control who can and can’t appear on an election ballot and under what circumstances, depriving New Jersey voters of the fundamental right to choose for themselves who represents them. It is wrong. It is illegal. It is a blatant over-reach by the majority party.”

.
“Abraham Lincoln said, ‘Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.’ The Democrats failed this most basic test. It’s a sad day for Democracy and one the NJGOP will not ignore. If the State Legislature is incapable of checking its own power, we will ask a court to do so.”
