Fundraising in a Digital Age

Last year Democrats across the country raised millions of dollars with their average donation being under $100. New Jersey saw millions of liberal grassroots dollars impact our congressional races. Now it is more important than ever that Republican campaigns in New Jersey catch up to our Democrat counterparts with the advancements that have been made in political fundraising. This panel of experts will teach attendees how to utilize cutting edge technology and tactics to fill their campaign coffers and compete in tough campaigns. Our panelists are:


John Gibson

John joined FLS Connect as a Vice President in January of 2015 and is our newest Partner. John has worked extensively with FLS clients to help their campaigns win elections and has extensive experience working and managing campaigns of all levels. Prior to FLS, John founded Field Vision, a political and grassroots advocacy management firm. In 2012, John served as Pennsylvania State Manager for the Romney for President Campaign, where he oversaw all aspects of the campaign including day-to-day operations, communications, field operations and the hiring and management of all staff. Further past positions include Regional Political Director for the RNC on two occasions and Executive Director for the Maryland Republican Party as well as campaign manager positions for numerous campaigns in the Northeast and Virginia. John is a graduate of Loyola University Maryland, and lives in New Jersey with his wife and two sons.

Katie Martinez

Katie Martinez joined the NJGOP as the finance director in 2018. Since then, the NJGOP has established a series of annual events, seen surge in small dollar donations, and a rise in digital fundraising.  A dynamic and seasoned political operative, Katie began her career as the Statewide Volunteer Director for Governor Christie’s re-election campaign. Since then she has worked for numerous campaigns and state parties in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and North Dakota. The latest, Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, where she simultaneously served as the New Jersey State Director and Bucks County Director, helping to hold the line in PA and deliver a huge win. Katie has also served as Chief of Staff to Assemblyman Erik Peterson.

Katie was named to Save Jersey’s 40 Right Women to Watch in 2019 and 30 Under 30 in 2016.


Michael K. Milligan

Michael Milligan has been active in raising funds for a variety of political organizations, political candidates, and non-profit organizations since the early 1980’s.  During this time he has raised over 100 million dollars through direct mail, telemarketing, special events, major donor programs, affinity cards, and merchandise sales.

Mike has been with Direct Mail Systems (DMS) since 1994.  DMS is located in Clearwater Florida and specializes in state party and candidate fundraising as well as absentee ballot and voter contact mail. Mike works closely with clients to develop overall message, theme and mail plans.  He is also responsible for coordinating all work with in-house staff for copy, creative design and production.  Clients include various state parties, candidates for Presidential, Gubernatorial, Congressional and statewide races.

Mike’s previous experience include serving as the Major Donor Director of the National Republican Congressional Committee; Deputy Executive Director and Finance Director of the Republican Party of Texas; National Representative of the Republican National Committee’s prestigious Eagle’s program; and PAC Director at the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

In addition to his direct mail expertise, Mike has a vast background in major donor, special event, and telemarketing.  He has coordinated over 50 Presidential and Vice Presidential events.  In addition he has coordinated many other highly visible fundraising events, including events at the White House, three Republican National Conventions, Presidential Inaugurals, and even the Superbowl.  He also has organized numerous meetings in Washington, D.C., and across the nation.

For the past several years Mike has served as a faculty member of the Republican National Committee and has been a speaker for a variety of groups including the Republican National Committee, Campaigns and Elections Seminars, Florida Non-Profit Association meetings, and numerous Republican State Party organizations.

Mike received his BA in English from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee.  He also attended Oxford University in Oxford, England with an Oxford Studies Scholarship and graduated from the RNC Campaign Management School.

Jamie Montgomery

Jamie started her career in New Jersey government and politics by working as a legislative Aide for State Senator Diane Allen in the 7th district from 1998-2000.  She went on to work in the Whitman Administration as Director of the Brownfield Reimbursement program as part of the Department of Commerce.  She transitioned into campaign politics and has been involved in fundraising and compliance in NJ since 2001.  She has worked on numerous local, county, state and federal races across the State.  Jamie has experience in both Federal Election Commission and NJ Election Law Enforcement Commission guidelines.  In addition to fundraising and compliance, she has served as Treasurer on several candidate committees and Political Action Committees as well as other Associations in NJ.  Jamie was elected to Town Council in Evesham Township, Burlington County in 2003 and served until 2005.  She currently lives in Burlington County with her husband and two children.


Michael Swetz

Michael is the Field Finance Director for the Republican National committee and has a strong political fundraising background.  He champions digital fundraising and fundraising events.  In 2018 he was able to help State Parties and campaigns raise over $4 million through from digital platforms, events, major donors, and mail solicitations.  Prior to the RNC, Michael worked for the New Hampshire GOP, Connecticut GOP, and on Linda McMahon’s 2012 race for U.S. Senate.
Michael graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 2012 with a B.S. in Political Science and Advertising.  He is 29 and currently resides in North Haven, Connecticut.
