The New Jersey Republican Party today called on the state’s campaign finance watchdog agency to investigate whether spending by Barbara Buono, the Democratic candidate for governor, violated state election law.

The GOP alleges that Buono used money from her state senate campaign committee to pay for a website, training and travel to benefit her gubernatorial bid before she officially declared plans to take on Gov. Chris Christie. She is also accused of exceeding contribution limits.

“The NJRSC asks that the Commission determine whether funds from Buono for Senate have been used to finance campaign related activities of Buono for Governor,” attorney Mark Sheridan wrote to the state Election Law Enforcement Commission.
