As delivered – Chairman Doug Steinhardt’s Testimony to the Senate Transportation Committee

December 13, 2019

December 12, 2019

I’m Doug Steinhardt, Chairman of the New Jersey Republican Party. I’m here today representing millions of New Jersey Republicans who won’t be shouted into a corner by liberal politicians promoting drivers licenses for illegal immigrants.

No matter how many bills you pass to rig our elections or silence the men and women fighting for honest answers to our state’s real problems, we won’t stop coming here.

Drivers licenses for illegal immigrants is a personal affront to the millions of NJ families who follow the law, play by the rules, and still struggle to get by because their representatives espouse idealism over ideas and promote progressivism over practicality.

Democrat politicians in this state seem bent on circumventing established laws rather than adhering to them, and creating loopholes rather than solving problems, real problems that NJ citizens face every day, like crime, taxes, transit, human trafficking and job loss.  Policies like these ignore the human consequences that come with putting politics before people and undermines the public trust in our elected leaders.

We are a nation of immigrants, yes, but we are also a nation of laws. I call on this committee to respect those laws. Go back to the drawing board, reach across the aisle and work on honest answers that solve real problems.

NJGOP Calls Out Murphy Disingenuous Effort On SALT

July 17, 2019
NJGOP Calls Out Murphy Disingenuous Effort On SALT

Trenton, NJ – Today, Governor Murphy announced that the state of New Jersey would file a lawsuit against the IRS to end the federal cap on SALT deductions.
.
NJGOP Chairman Steinhardt released the following statement, calling out the disingenuous nature of Governor Murphy’s lawsuit:
.
“When we say we want honest answers to real problems, this lawsuit is exactly what we are NOT talking about. If Phil Murphy really cared about the infamous property tax burden that all New Jersey families carry, he would have addressed it in any of his budgets or through legislation in Trenton. He has raised taxes and increased spending at every turn.

“This lawsuit is a political stunt and another waste of taxpayer money. If we really want to lift the SALT cap, then we need to send representatives to Washington that can actually have a conversation with President Trump. Right now, we have a group of Trump protestors like Tom Malinowski who spend their time trying to impeach the President rather than improve New Jersey.”

NJGOP Chairman: Governor Murphy Must Submit Himself To Ethics Panel Investigation Over Sky Blue FC Conflicts

January 25, 2019

NJGOP Chairman: Governor Murphy Must Submit Himself To Ethics Panel Investigation Over Sky Blue FC Conflicts

For Immediate Release

Trenton, NJ – Following reports yesterday that Governor Murphy was directly involved with the recruitment of a draft pick for his professional women’s soccer team, Sky Blue FC,it has come to light that Governor Murphy may have violated state ethics laws.

Hometown soccer star Julia Ashley told reporters she would rather leave the country than play for Murphy’s soccer team. Murphy called her personally, and unsuccessfully, to convince her to stay. Sky Blue FC  made news recently for the poor conditions to which it subjects its female members.

Governor Murphy’s direct involvement in the management of Sky Blue looks like a clear violation of the state’s ethics rules. By his own admission, he put the team into a blind trust during his public service to avoid the conflicts of interest his ownership would create. The team plays its games on state property at Rutgers and has multiple sponsors who receive state funding.

To get to the bottom of yet another scandal, NJGOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt called on Governor Murphy to submit himself to an ethics investigation by the administration’s Advisory Ethics Panel.

“Governor Murphy needs to account to the people of New Jersey and prove that he will hold himself to some ethical standard,” Steinhardt said. “He needs to take personal responsibility for his decisions. In the spirit of good government and public transparency, he needs to go to the Advisory Ethics Panel and request a written ruling on whether he stepped out of bounds trying to salvage his sweat shop soccer team.”

Steinhardt added, “An inquiry of this magnitude cannot be delegated to the Governor’s senior staff, who have demonstrated repeatedly and under oath that they lack a clear understanding of the importance of ethical standards. The Governor likes to say that the buck stops with him. Here’s his chance to put his money where his mouth is. It can’t be one set of rules for him and another set for everyone else.”

“On his first day on the job, Governor Murphy signed Executive Order no. 2, which governs ethics in his office,” Steinhardt concluded. “It’s time Phil Murphy calls balls and strikes on himself.”

NJGOP Launches Micro-Site/Digital Ad Campaign Revealing The Real Mikie Sherrill

NJGOP Launches Micro-Site/Digital Ad Campaign Revealing The Real Mikie Sherrill

Trenton, NJ – Today, the New Jersey Republican State Committee launched the website www.MikieMurphyMenendez.com. NJGOP Chairman Doug Steinhardt offered the following comments on the new website:

“Voters in North Jersey deserve to know the truth about Mikie Sherrill and the liberal and corrupt company she keeps.  People who get to know her beyond her sleek campaign ads need to know that she is funded by the most liberal wing of the Democratic Party.

“Phil Murphy, New Jersey’s most liberal governor – ever- is one of her loudest cheerleaders. The man who raised your taxes by over a billion dollars for items like legal aid for illegal immigrants and making New Jersey a Sanctuary State wants to send the same kind of extreme, liberal agenda To Washington, in the form of Mikie Sherrill.

“She even stands proudly with corrupt Senator Bob Menendez, while touting her service as a former federal prosecutor.  This is the same Bob Menendez who was admonished by a bi-partisan panel of US Senators for his illegal and unethical acts.  If she thinks taking lavish gifts from criminal donors in exchange for government favors is appropriate, then voters in North Jersey need to know that.”

NJGOP ED: Biden, Murphy and Mikie In One Room Should Make Taxpayers Nervous

NJGOP ED: Biden, Murphy and Mikie In One Room Should Make Taxpayers Nervous

Trenton, NJ – Today House candidate in NJ-11 Mikie Sherrill hosted Governor Phil Murphy and former Vice President Joe Biden for a rally in Montclair. NJGOP Executive Director Theresa Winegar released the following statement regarding the event:

“Having those three in the same room should make every taxpayer in New Jersey nervous. Governor Murphy just got done raising his first round of taxes by nearly $2 billion, Vice President Biden proposed another $17 billion in taxes while he was on stage and Mikie Sherrill would need all the ink she could get her hands on for her rubber stamp if she were in Congress.”

NJGOP Chairman Chastises Democrat’s Plan To Give Major Bonus To Career Politicians

NJGOP Chairman Chastises Democrat’s Plan To Give Major Bonus To Career Politicians

Trenton, NJ – Following the breaking news that Democrat Assemblyman McKeon’s legislation (NJ A4176 ) has been scheduled for a hearing in the Budget Committee Monday Afternoon, NJGOP Chairman Steinhardt released the following statement:

“Today’s Democrat pension bill ensures New Jersey’s continued decline. When people think about politicians standing in a smoke filled, back room, slapping each others backs, this is the kind of deal they envision. Everyone in Trenton has been talking for years about our pension system mess. There may be differing, yet well-intentioned, opinions on how to fix it, but this bill is a slap in the face to every New Jersey taxpayer who will be required to pay for it. Giving a major bonus to insider, career politicians is New Jersey politics at its worst. Our elected officials should be looking out for taxpayers, not each other. Whatever momentum this bill is building should be stopped dead in its tracks. Then, shift gears and start solving the State’s pension crisis instead of exacerbating it.”

GOP Leaders In New Jersey Call On Menendez To Resign

GOP Leaders In New Jersey Call On Menendez To Resign
NJGOP Leadership Calls On Democrat Counterparts To Join

.
Trenton, NJ – Following the United States Senate Ethics Committee’s severe admonishment of Senator Bob Menendez, GOP leaders NJGOP Chair Doug Steinhardt and Vice Chair Lynda Pagliughi called for the New Jersey Democrat State Committee to assist in forcing Menendez to step down. Other GOP leaders in the legislature called on Senator Menendez to step away.
.
“Republicans and Democrats cannot agree on which way is up and which way is down, but yesterday they were able to come together and agree that Bob Menendez is corrupt and issue him an official admonishment,” said Steinhardt. “Menendez has lost the respect of the institution of the Senate and his Senate colleagues. The NJGOP calls on our Democrat counterparts at the New Jersey Democrat State Committee to join us in restoring honor to New Jersey’s U.S. Senate delegation by calling on Senator Menendez to resign.”
.
Vice Chair Pagliughi added, “Enough is enough with Senator Menendez’s stream of embarrassments to our great state. Anyone with common sense can see that he broke the rules by accepting lavish gifts and then used his role as Senator to advance the business interests of his friend, convicted felon, Solomon Melgen. If a bi-partisan group in Washington can come together to scold Menedez, we can do the same in New Jersey. I hope the Democrat State Committee will join us in calling for him to step aside.”
.
Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean added, “On a bi-partisan basis, members of both parties agree that Bob Menendez is corrupt. The people of New Jersey deserve a level of representation that is far superior to what they are receiving from Senator Menendez. It’s time for him to resign.”
.
Senate Republican Whip Joe Pennacchio echoed, “Following the admonishment by the Senate Ethics Committee I think that Senator Menendez should give serious thought to not putting New Jersey through the torment of seeing yet another elected official added to a long line of questionable dealings. For New Jersey’s sake, he should resign.”
.
Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick added, “The bipartisan group of Senators on the Ethics Committee couldn’t be any more clear. It’s time for Menendez to resign.”
.
Assembly Republican Conference Leader Tony Bucco Jr.  declared,”The unanimous findings of the Senate Ethics Committee, which found that Senator Menendez violated federal law and abused his position, confirms that he’s violated the public trust and no longer deserves to be in public office.”
.
Finally, Assembly Republican Whip Nancy Munoz said, “The Senate Ethics Committee’s unanimous findings that Senator Menendez broke the law and abused his office confirms what we all suspected, and he should resign.”

NJGOP Chairman – Usually Outspoken Senator Loretta Weinberg Remarkably Quiet in Wake of her Port Authority Protege’s Resignation.

NJGOP Chairman – Usually outspoken Senator Loretta Weinberg Remarkably Quiet in Wake of her Port Authority protege’s resignation.
.
Trenton, NJ – Following the news that the Port Authority Commissioner whom Senator Loretta Weinberg shepherded through the approval process resigned after a shameful ethics violation, NJGOP Chairman Steinhardt released the following statement:
.
“According to Ted Sherman at nj.com, the first casualty of the NY/NJ Port Authority’s newly implemented ethics reforms is none other than the Chair of the Authority’s own Ethics Committee and former Clinton and Corzine finance committee member, Caren Z. Turner. Turner was nominated by former Governor Chris Christie at the request and on the recommendation of Senator Loretta Weinberg. And while the  Inspector General referred to Turner’s conduct as ‘profoundly disturbing’ the usually outspoken Weinberg has been unusually silent in the wake of her Port Authority protege’s abrupt resignation.”

We’ll work city by city, town by town and seat by seat to take control of our state and put us back on the right track. Getting 400 leaders and influencers of the Republican party under one roof for the first time in years for today’s Summit sends exactly that message.”

This weekend we proved that the GOP in New Jersey is in a good position to take on the challenges of 2018. I look forward to continuing to fight along side everyone who attended to create a bright future for New Jersey.”

.
Assembly Republican Leader Bramnick added, “Building on the success of the NJGOP Summit this weekend, the Assembly Republicans stand ready to take on Phil Murphy’s extreme policies. Joining with Republicans from every corner of the state, I look forward to working together to support all of our candidates.”

“The Leadership Summit brought a diverse group of members of our party together for a meaningful exchange of ideas,” said NJGOP Executive Director Theresa Winegar. “I am particularly proud of the platforms that this event offered to the newly formed African American Republican Coalition and the female leaders of our party featured on the Women in Politics Panel as well as our keynote speaker, Alexandra Smith.”
